MMCRU Girls Remain Unbeaten, Have Lock On War Eagle Title

HARTLEY, Iowa - With the War Eagle Conference title locked up and tucked away, MMCRU girls conquered another opponent on Feb. 4, eliminating the host Hawks of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS), 57-33.

The victory improves the Royals record to an unblemished 18-0, and completes the season sweep of HMS. MMCRU was credited with a 41 point drubbing back in mid-January in Marcus.

Back in November in the Pre-Season Basketball rankings, the ROyals opened up as 11th ranked. MMCRU moved up to No. 9 in the Dec. 12 and 19th polls, and the last six weeks have held onto the No. 6 ranking in Class 1A. 

Ellie Hilbrands supplied MMCRU  with a game-best 20 points against the Hawks on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 10-of-14 effort at the foul line. Hilbrands also pulled down five boards and added an assist to her statistical line for the game.

Taylor Harpenau was the only other Royal in double figures, winding up with 12 points. Harpenau also scooped up a game-best seven assists and dealt out four assists. 

"We followed the game plan and got the ball inside to Ellie in the post," said MMCRU coach Gillian Letsche.

Kora Alesch and Mya Holmes also had three steals each for MMCR, which finished with 15 as a team.

The Royals got off to a quick start up 14-2 after one quarter and kept their foot on the accelerator the rmeainder of the way. MMCRU led 30-11 headed to the locker room at half, and was up 43-21 at the end of three periods.

The Royals shot a sprakling 53 percent (17-of-32) against the pugnacious bunch of Hawks. MMCRU held a notable edge in foul shooting as they finished 21-of-33 (64%) to just 5-of-7 (71%) for HMS. The host Hawks committed 28 personal fouls to only 17 for MMCRU.

HMS was led by Paige Dagel with seven and Olivia Grooters with eight points.

The Royals wrap up the regular season with a Friday date at LeMars Gehlen and close the regular season at home on Tuesday, Feb. 11 against South O'Brien.
