CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - It had the makings of a long game, right from the start for River Valley.
The Lawton-Bronson girls put together a 19-2 opening quarter pulling away from River Valley in the first eight minutes en route to a 53-25 Western Valley Conference victory.
One of the basic rules is don't turn over the basketball if you expect to win. Apparently, RIver Valley didn't get that in their game notes. The Wolverines finished with 35 turnovers - 10 more turnovers than points, proved a deadly combination.
Cold shooting also plagued River Valley which saw three of its five starters go a combined 0-of-20 from the floor, including 0-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line. It marked the Wolverines eighth consecutive loss, falling to 2-14 on the season.
The upside of the story for RIver Valley is its performance by a pair of underclassmen. Freshmen Maddie Thomas and Sara Holtz combined for 22 of the team's 25 points. Thomas finished with a game-best 16 of 7-of-15 shooting overall and 2-of-2 effort at the charity stripe. Holtz finished with six points on 2-of-3 shooting , both coming from beyond the arc. It marked the ninth time this season either Thomas or Holtz has led the Wolverines offensively.
The Wolverines wound up on the short end of rebounding as well. Lawton-Bronson pulled down 31 to River Valley's 25. Thomas led River Valley's efforts on the glass with six. Another Wolverine freshman, Addisyn Goettsch grabbed five, and senior Sydney Zahnley had five rebounds.
Lawton-Bronson (5-10) winners of three straight shot 42.5 percent (20-of-47) for the game overall, including sinking four treys. Emma Ricke finished with 15 points and Abby Kamm with 14.
Up next for River Valley is a Class 1A ranked opponent in unbeaten MMCRU (15-0) on Monday.
